About this event

The Indianapolis City Market, Indiana Landmarks and Tomlinson Tap Room invite hospitality workers to Explore the City Market Catacombs on this relaxed, adults-only tour at a special discounted rate to celebrate National Travel & Tourism Week.

Meet on the 2nd level of Indianapolis City Market and grab a beverage for the tour at nearby Tomlinson Tap Room, before joining the guided descent into a site usually hidden from public view: the Catacombs, a Roman-looking expanse of brick arches beneath Whistler Plaza. Along the way, you’ll hear stories of two historic buildings, City Market and Tomlinson Hall.

Our Catacombs don’t have bones or crypts—at least none that we know of. But you will see scores of brick barrel-vaulted arches and experience two pieces of historic Indianapolis. The Catacombs are what remains of Tomlinson Hall (1886), an imposing building whose main hall seated more than 3,500 people. Tomlinson Hall burned in January 1958. The city took down the remains later that year and today an arch from the hall is all that remains above ground.

Document your experience by photographing yourself in the space, posing with props and sharing your images on social media with the tag #IndyCityMarketCatacombsTours.

Tours last approximately 30 minutes and depart from near Tomlinson Tap Room on the 2nd level of Indianapolis City Market, 222 E. Market Street, Indianapolis.

Please note: These tours are not accessible for those with mobility or respiratory issues. The Catacombs feature uneven dirt floors and are a musty, sometimes damp area. All participants must review and sign a waiver before the tour. Tourgoers must wear a face covering over their mouth and nose when in the Catacombs, due to air quality (outside pandemic recommendations). Closed toes shoes that can get dusty are encouraged.
